About Us

So much feels broken and divided right now, and it's tempting to believe fixing it is someone else's job: the government, leaders, someone with more power than us. We at Sensation of Oneness help people see through the illusion of separateness behind that division and re-village their lives into real, meaningful communities. Instead of waiting for the world to feel whole again, together we become one of the places where it already does.

That's not a theory to Terry Mollner. It's the work of his life.

Terry Mollner, the founder of Sensation of Oneness, had something happen to him at fifteen years old that changed the direction of his life. In that moment, he made the first of four vows he would keep with himself over the decades that followed. The first: to discover the meaning of life — which he defined then as knowing what to do each moment. He has done many things across his 81 years, but this has always been his highest priority.

What he discovered is something people have searched for throughout history: how to reach full maturity in the skill of human self-consciousness. Because it's grounded in fact rather than belief, he's confident others have found it too. His book, Only Oneness Is Real, is written so readers can self-elder themselves into full maturity in this skill. Because it is based on fact, it is physics, not spirituality. Through this book he's sharing what he's learned so others don't have to, like him, take decades to master it.

In brief, he discovered there are seven layers of maturity of the skill of human self-consciousness. Other animals master the first two, but we can master the remaining five because of our invention of words. They let us mature beyond simply being "conscious," like other animals, into being "self-conscious." By our twenties, today, most people on Earth have reached the fifth layer (Adult layer), but few master the last two, which he calls the Elder and Mature Elder layers. Both are easy to learn, but until we learn them, we operate under the illusion the universe is separate parts. That illusion was necessary: it's what let us master the use of words (Child layer), exercise individual free choice (Teen layer), and freely choose the beliefs we use to guide our thinking and behavior (Adult layer).

It's at the next layer, the Elder layer, that we discover the universe operates as an undividable whole, as one thing. Inventing the illusion that the universe is made of separate parts was our most brilliant invention! It's what is allowing the undividable universe, through us, to mature into full maturity in the skill of self-consciousness.

In the above book, Terry asks readers 9 Questions that lead them to discover this for themselves, a fact so obvious and self-evident that, if it weren't true, none of us would be able to ask those questions. From there, he guides readers through the ten smaller skills we need to master at the Elder layer and the five we need to master at the Mature Elder layer. The Sensation of Oneness Weekend Seminar offers a chance to learn these skills alongside others, in a deep and enjoyable way (no fee, donations only).

Our purpose is to build a movement that helps everyone, everywhere, master these last two layers of maturity, the skill that produces what's usually called "happiness" or "enlightenment." Terry is quick to point out this doesn't mean he, or any of us, is always good at it. It means we now know how to do it, and we'll keep getting better at it for the rest of our lives. It's no longer a mystery. It's a skill, not a belief we choose in words. Building this movement is the mission of Sensation of Oneness.

Terry was one of six children in a devout Catholic family in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. He earned his doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts, and in his younger years moved from training to be a Jesuit priest; to acting, singing, and modeling; to psychotherapy; to social activism. That last chapter led him to become one of the founders of the first family of socially responsible mutual funds, the Calvert Social Funds, now managing more than $40 billion. He then led the creation of Calvert Impact, which has raised and loaned more than $3 billion, both at low interest rates, to reduce poverty around the world. In 2000, when competitive pressure from international distribution pushed Ben & Jerry's toward acquisition by a multinational, he stepped in to help his friend Ben Cohen keep the company true to its social mission when bought by Unilever.

To learn how we can re-village our lives in a modern context, he has co-founded three intentional communities, all of them still in existence. He now believes humanity is ready for a new form of governance: "agreement nations." They are communities defined by shared agreements rather than geography. These would exist as nonprofit democratic membership organizations within, and fully supportive of, the geographically defined nations we already have. Like any nation, they would work to meet the needs of their members without ever losing awareness that natural priority is the common good of all of humanity, nature, and the universe as one thing.

We now know why we've matured to full maturity in the skill of self-consciousness: so we can give priority to keeping, and joyfully living inside, agreements with each other, grounded in the most fundamental fact: the universe operates as an undividable whole, as one thing, or none of us would be breathing.

He is an active father to his 20-year-old daughter, now at Columbia University, whom he co-parents with her two lesbian moms, and he lives with his love, Lucy, near Amherst, Massachusetts.
